04/02/2017 - 11:36
There are numerous places where teachers turn to for new, better, or more engaging activities for their students, including printed materials, websites and, of course, their colleagues. One would think that there’s no real need to create yet another online storage of activities that “can help a busy teacher”… but #flashmobELT was designed to be more than just that. In this session you will find out all about the advantages and originality of #FlashmobELT project, learn how to benefit from it and freshen up your classes with activities that have been successfully tried out in classrooms around the world.
Never the twain shall meet? Differences in teaching general and business English -Marjorie Rosenberg
04/02/2017 - 11:25
General English teachers may be reluctant to make the change to business English, especially if they have never worked outside of the school or university system. However, this stretch into a new area may be less daunting than many think. There are differences, of courses, as business English may be more purpose-driven and needs to include specific areas of vocabulary, but for those interested in taking on the challenge, this workshop aims to provide practical tips on how to get started.
Action Research and the Voice of Teachers-Divya Madhavan
04/02/2017 - 11:13
This session is a step-by-step description of what an action research project looks like, from broad questions like “what is (and isn’t) data?” to specific questions of “how can I write up data?”. This will be your chance to talk to me and other people interested in action research, think about why you might want to do it and consider what sorts of things you may learn or unlearn from it. I will also address a number of myths about the world of research and suggest some ways of navigating the complexity of the academic world.
Many strands of ELT emphasise the importance of interaction, responding to students language needs in the moment and creating language-rich classrooms. In this talk I argue that while these are valuable approaches in principle, in practice they demand a lot of the teacher and teacher education and development programmes may not address these problem. I will suggest some tasks for teachers to develop their language awareness on an ongoing basis.

Picture this: students gazing out the window, imagining themselves after class, talking to friends or fantasizing about the weekend. Picture this: students who feel shy or inhibited when talking about themselves, at a loss for words. Picture this: heaps of ideas using photographs either taken by students themselves or from resources like #ELTpics to keep your students in the picture.
