Professional development for EFL teachers: insights from “Lesson Study”

Audience focus: All

Abstract

As EFL teachers, we constantly strive to refine our practice and deepen our understanding of how students learn best. Participating in the professional development programme Lesson Study Flanders has been a useful journey that allowed me to grow as a more effective and better-documented teacher of English as a foreign language.
In this presentation, I will share how this collaborative, research-based approach to professional development empowered me to critically reflect on my teaching practices, align my lessons more closely with students’ needs, and integrate an evidence-based method into my classroom. By working with colleagues to design, observe, and refine lessons, I gained valuable insights into fostering student engagement and language acquisition.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of what Lesson Study entails, its impact on professional growth, and practical takeaways for implementing this model in their own teaching context. This session will inspire them to explore how collaboration and reflection can improve teaching practice and enhance the learning experience for students.
