Since its launch in November 2022, Chat GPT has created waves of uncertainty across academia and the education sector. English-language teaching is particularly vulnerable to AI-assisted plagiarism and it is important that as an industry, we are cautious and seek to protect the integrity of our assessments and examinations. This is why it is first crucial that practical strategies are provided to help English-language teachers identify student use of AI. In this way, AI text generation can fall under the wider plagiarism policies that schools already have in place. Nevertheless, it is clear that student usage will increase as this technology develops. It is likely that newer, more sophisticated text generators will be developed in the near future. This is why, second of all, it is important for English-language teachers to seek to incorporate AI text generation into their classes and assist student learning. Indeed, looking forward, AI text generation provides compelling evidence of both the importance of language accuracy (a topic sometimes neglected) as well as student desire to produce accurate language.
Biographies
I am a Senior Lecturer at Rotterdam Business School, part of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam). I came to the Netherlands to study (Philosophy MA, 120ects, cum laude) and graduated in 2016. I worked as a freelancer for a number of years before becoming a full-time lecturer in Rotterdam. I am currently responsible for a range of English programmes within Rotterdam Business School, including curriculum design, coordination and team leadership. We have over 3,000 attending students across our 4-year bachelor programme at Rotterdam Business School, which is taught entirely in English. My courses are core, mandatory components of the curriculum, which focusses on Business English & Communications.
Dana Roskey is a Senior Lecturer at Rotterdam Business School (RBS), part of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool Rotterdam). Dana is a key curriculum designer at RBS. He designs a wide range of English-language courses, which are taken by our large student body of 3,000 students across a 4-year programme. Dana has teaching and curriculum design experience in three continents, including Ethiopia, the Netherlands and his home country of the United States.
