In a world where teenagers spend a lot of their time glued to YouTube and screens, videos are a logical stimulus for language generation and practice. Although ungraded videos can be daunting, they can be great SILENT allies, and in this workshop, we'll try a handful of engaging activities you can incorporate in lessons to generate language, learning and fun.

After 28 years in Spain, Fiona now lives in Oxford, working as a materials writer, teacher trainer, and speaker. Her writing is mainly for secondary, adults, or Graded Readers, but she also writes teacher development materials and short courses. She is co-editor of the IATEFL TDSIG e-bulletin and one of the two founders of EVE: Equal Voices in ELT.

Why have you chosen this topic for your presentation?

I have been doing a lot of work on the use of visuals, the cognitive development of adolescents, motivation and multiple stimuli. This topic brings it all together in an enjoyable session.

What do you want participants to take away from your presentation?

A lot of ideas they can use in the lessons 'on Monday', but also a techno-tip and a little cognitive development, motivation and perception theory, too. 'Have fun, be challenged AND learn'.

Summary of presentation

The workshop is a 'compendium' of ideas using different videos and techniques, but with the videos on silent. There are activities for question forming, vocabulary generation / revision, grammar practice (imperatives etc), skills work. With a longer timeslot, I can develop the activities a little and add two or three more, which I have also found to be very useful and fun, when working with students and teachers alike. The video content varies, from how to, to values training, to narratives, to - in one case - an 'invisible' video (ie the students make it up).
