The BELTA Board has been hard at work lining up great speakers for this year’s event. Our plenary speaker – Scott Thornbury – is well-known in the ELT world, having published a number of methodology books adored by ELT Teachers around the world and for his blog (An A-Z of ELT). He will be joined by a record number of speakers from Belgium (7) and 13 additional speakers from Malta, Germany, The Ukraine and The United Kingdom! You can check out a paper version of the schedule by clicking the link at the bottom of this page.
The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Defining Language & Fluency in a Global Context’. As we move from teaching in very regional and national settings to preparing our students to work in a Global English context, it is critical that we re-examine our beliefs about language and fluency.
Scott Thornbury will address both topics in his plenaries during BELTA Day 2018. In addition, a number of break-out sessions deal with the conference theme as well, including (TEDxOdense speaker) Heather Hansen’s Beyond Intelligibility: Pronunciation Teaching in Global Environments, The Belgian IATEFL (2018) Presenter’s Grant Winner Natascha Coene’s Three types of presentations used to write a reading portfolio, Fiona Mauchline’s Silent Videos, Talking Teens (active adults, too), and BELTA’s president’s – John Arnold – Visualising Speaking for Students.
Other break-out topics include technology, literature, use of film, assessment and feedback, task-based learning/project-based learning and special projects for the classroom. Break-out sessions were carefully chosen based on their practical nature; our speakers will give our participants practical applications they can use in their classrooms. You can consult this list of sessions broken down by presentation focus and relevant audience focus.
