The Fulbright Commission is proud to announce the opening of applications for the 2018 Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders on Environmental Issues, a program that might be of interest to students at your institution.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, this academic program is designed for foreign undergraduate students between the ages of 18 and 25 and is designed to improve their understanding of the United States and to develop their leadership skills. The Institutes consist of interactive classroom activities, discussions, lectures, readings, site visits, workshops and leadership skills building activities, community service, and opportunities for participants to interact with their American peers on a college campus.
The Institute on Environmental Issues, hosted by the University of Oregon, will explore current themes about environmental studies (e.g. natural resource management, ecotourism). The program will be interactive and experiential, with field trips to research facilities and opportunities for classroom discussion. The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations working in the field. The Institute will then conclude with a visit to Washington, D.C. The program is free for participants: benefits include include program costs and accommodation, travel, and sickness and accident insurance. Applications are available on the Fulbright website. The application must be completed (typed), scanned, and returned by email to adviser@fulbright.be by January 1, 2018. A mandatory in-person interview will take place on January 12, 2018, in Brussels and candidates will be notified the following week.
In order to promote the SUSI Program to our target audience (undergraduate students), the Fulbright Commission is reaching out to teachers and professors at universities and university colleges across Belgium with information about the program as well as a Teacher Toolkit. This toolkit is intended to provide teachers with the resources to teach the following skills to students in universities and university colleges: 1) developing an American-style resume and cover letter; 2) crafting a personal statement; and 3) requesting letters of recommendation.
We encourage you to use the resources included in this teacher toolkit to develop assignments and in-class activities for your students, and to share information with them about opportunities like the Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders. We’ve also sent you a flyer and a copy of the application form, which you are welcome to distribute.
