Love for literature: creative ways for students to express reading experiences

Audience focus:

  • Teacher trainers
  • Freelance teachers

Abstract

The new curricula for English only list one literature goal: ‘Students express their own experiences and interpretations of literary texts in English’. So, as a teacher, you do not need to provide your students with a history lesson or a deep literary analysis - the emphasis lies on experiencing literature. Some teachers may find this ‘useless’ and believe that students should learn things, instead of only having fun. However, both content and fun have a role to play: research shows that pleasure in reading motivates students, which enhances their learning. Therefore, why not try to combine content, literary analysis and creative processing through pleasurable tasks? In this session, participants will be presented with various ready-to-use activities for English class groups linked to literature, that can easily be adapted to suit other levels or to match a different literature assignment.
